Description
The City of Hamilton (City) will undertake a Historical Land Use Inventory of its urban area to provide City staff with data on properties known to be contaminated or potentially contaminated by past industrial or commercial land use activities. The inventory information will be stored in a centralized database and will be an important tool for the City to identify and manage priority sites for remediation and re-development. A related database will identify particular chemicals associated with historical land use activities. This will be useful to determine the contaminants likely to be present on a property and thus assist in identifying the steps necessary to properly identify and clean-up these chemicals. The four key project activities include: designing a Geographic Information System (GIS) database to store historical land use information; collecting data of urban historical land use for database; developing a reference database; and developing a procedures manual for updating inventory and tracking data. A public consultation program will be included in the planning study to ensure all stakeholders have an opportunity to participate in and contribute to prioritizing future remediation and redevelopment works.
