Description
The City of London is investigating the potential of developing a showcase community featuring homes with trend-setting energy efficient technologies, an integrated community energy system, and innovative renewable energy solutions. Sustainable neighbourhood design concepts such as pedestrian-oriented access to amenities, neighbourhood living, proximity to public transportation, and reduced road width will also be integrated into the community. To advance this vision, the City will use this study to review and evaluate the energy technologies which may be implemented in the residences of the showcase community. The evaluation will include a full range of energy efficiency measures, innovative energy conservation features and renewable technologies. Alternatives to be considered include passive solar house design, high efficiency heating and cooling systems, smart appliances, solar hot water heating, community-based waste to energy, aquifer heat recovery, and community based heating. The result of the evaluation will be a list of suitable technologies for the residences, along with implementation plans and associated business models. The eventual capital implementation project of a showcase community could result in a household GHG reduction of approximately 4.8 tonnes per year per household.
