Description
The City of Guelph (City) currently achieves a municipal solid waste diversion rate of 54 per cent - one of the highest urban diversion rates in Canada. To meet and exceed the Province of Ontario’s recently established municipal solid waste diversion target of 60 per cent by 2008, the City will conduct a comprehensive review of its current waste management system and develop a solid waste management plan that will identify a new preferred waste management system that will target the diversion of 43,937 tonnes per year or 70 per cent of waste. The plan will include the development of strategies to increase the capture of recyclable materials from waste streams currently managed and unmanaged; drop off depots and reuse centres which may serve as a recovery point for materials from the industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) sector; measures to optimize performance of the materials recovery facility and composter; and a local residuals disposal facility such as thermal treatment. A local residuals management facility, as opposed to one in St. Thomas, will likely result in a significant reduction of transportation related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. More efficient transportation routes and collection methods will also result in GHG reductions.
