Description
The Rouville Regional County Municipality (RCM) will undertake a field test of an integrated waste management plan suited to a mix of rural and urban residents. In urban areas, the RCM will test large roll-out bins instead of traditional blue boxes to reduce the frequency of collection of recyclable materials, and introduce weekly curbside organics collection. In rural areas, the RCM will field test a backyard composting project that includes a public awareness campaign. Environmental benefits include a reduction in vehicle emissions due to a decreased frequency of collection and a reduction of organic matter buried at the landfill that would subsequently generate greenhouse gases. By increasing the frequency of the collection of organic waste and by disposing of this waste at a composting facility, the applicant expects the diversion rate of organics to reach approximately 20 per cent. This could represent a reduction of 2,907 cubic metres of methane (CH4) at the landfill.
