Description

The Haut-Saint-Laurent and Beauharnois-Salaberry Regional County Municipalities (RCMs) will work together in this study to move toward their objective of achieving a waste recovery rate of 65 per cent over the next four years (2005-2008). The study will cover all municipalities within these two neighbouring RCMs and will consider all waste that can be diverted: recyclables, organic materials, textiles, bulky refuse and hazardous household waste (HHW). The RCMs will implement a waste management plan (WMP) that will include the introduction of a performance management system (PMS) tool that will serve as a management framework to allow the RCMs to gather data and track the results of diversion and recovery rates of the various waste material categories. Over the long-term, the PMS will generate new knowledge that could influence and guide performance progress within the RCMs. The potential total waste diversion for both RCMs is estimated at 17,700 tonnes. This would reduce GHG emissions by 6,000 metric tonnes per year for the two RCMs combined.
