Description

The County of Red Deer is partnering with the City of Red Deer, Olds College and local livestock operators to undertake a feasibility study of a biogas co-generation system fuelled by animal wastes, manure and municipal organic waste. This is in response to the socio-environmental impact of the closure of the County’s landfill site and the transportation of significant amounts of organic waste, generated by the County’s large number of intensive livestock operations, to neighbouring Clearwater or Camrose Counties. Feedstock, carcasses and animal waste not being shipped to a rendering plant in the City of Edmonton are being left to decompose on area farms, potentially affecting local air, water and soil quality. It is estimated that a biogas co-generation system could substitute up to 35 per cent of the total fossil fuel energy consumed in the area, while simultaneously diverting organic waste materials.
