Description

This project involves the preservation of an historic 1860s farmhouse owned by the Town of Halton Hills. The unoccupied 238 square metres house has a prominent location on a major road at the rural edge of the Georgetown Urban Area, surrounded by 100 acres of publicly owned farmland, which will be developed by the Town for cemetery, parkland and sports field purposes. The goal of the project is to create a highly energy efficient and comfortable structure with state of the art heating and servicing systems (including geothermal and radiant heating installations) that will keep heating and utility costs low and affordable for building use by non-profit organizations in the medium term, and the municipality in the longer term. This special application of retrofitting a heritage building will be a model for homeowners and small businesses to emulate. When the renovation is compete, on-site demonstration displays will describe the efficiency measures incorporated and their associated cost savings. The Friends of Devereaux House is entering into a lease agreement with the Town to operate the building. Halton Hills Hydro (the local utility provider) is giving technical assistance to the energy efficiency aspects of the project.
