Description

This study would examine the use of an innovative turbine design in the construction of a small–hydro electricitygeneration facility on the South River. The plant would provide most of the energy required by the people living in thevillage. Because hydroelectric power produces no greenhouse gas emissions, this project would reduce all of theemissions currently generated by the village's existing source of electricity - the Ontario Hydro grid. Using the river'snatural flow, the facility could generate roughly 800 kilowatts of energy. A local resident who owns the land is willing towork as a partner with the village, and the Ministry of Natural Resources is willing to discuss divesting a control dam itbuilt at the site in the early 1970s. The project would be combined with the development of a park–like communityresource. The study will also incorporate environmental impact and will identify logical development alternatives, as wellas develop a preliminary design and cost–estimate of the preferred alternative.
