Description

In satisfaction of the first three milestones of the FCM–ICLEI (Local Governmetns for Sustainability) Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program, the City of Fernie will develop a local action plan (LAP) for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in both municipal operations and the community. First, the project team will complete a GHG emissions inventory for the municipal vehicle fleet, buildings, street lights, sewage, water and waste systems. It will also conduct a similar inventory of emissions produced by the residential, institutional, commercial and industrial sectors. Next, the team will set emission-reduction targets for both the municipality and the community, and will identify current and future initiatives aimed at achieving these targets. The initiatives will be prioritized according to their GHG-reduction potential, technical feasibility and cost effectiveness. The LAP will prepare for the implementation of energy-efficiency upgrades to local buildings, an anti-idling campaign and programs aimed at waste reduction. LAP-supported programs will likely cut GHG emissions by 20 per cent by 2012. Air quality improvements will also benefit the health and well-being of residents.
