Description

The Bas-Richelieu RCM is responsible for waste management in eight of its 12 municipalities. While the RCM currently diverts 70 to 75 percent of the waste received at its sorting/composting plant, bulky refuse, construction material and hazardous household wastes are rarely recovered. To increase the global waste diversion rate, the RCM will study the feasibility of setting up an ecocentre in its jurisdiction. The ecocentre would be a management and transition site to serve the 12 municipalities, diverting the types of hazardous and other wastes currently not recovered. The RCM estimates that approximately 90 percent of the material received at the sorting/composting facility and the ecocentre could be diverted. Additional benefits include: reduced likelihood of soil and growndwater contamination from heavy metals; reduced air pollution from volatile organic compounds, and; a longer life span for the landfill site
