Description
The Town of Colonsay has a sports centre that consists of curling and skating ice surfaces and a banquet hall. Theexisting ice–making and building heating equipment at the centre is failing. The community has decided to install a moreinnovative system - a heat pump with geo–thermal sink and heat source - to replace the conventional equipment. Thiswill be the first facility in Saskatchewan to use this technology at this relatively small scale. The new system's energycosts will be significantly lower than those of the old system. The project is also expected to provide new incomeopportunities for the community, because the facility will now be available year–round instead of seasonally. Theproject's total cost is estimated at $360,000. The Town of Colonsay, with fewer than 500 inhabitants, has so far raisedmore than $100,000 for this project from community events and donations. Other, similar–sized western communitieswill likely be able to install the same technology.
