Description

The City of Peterborough, in partnership with the local municipally-owned utility company, Peterborough Utility Services Incorporated, will retrofit 100 social housing units (2, 3, and 4 bedroom townhouses and apartments) by replacing inefficient electric baseboard heaters with electric storage heaters. The heaters will acquire and store heat during non-peak periods for release in peak hours. This will result in consumption of less expensive, non-fossil fuel generated energy, a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and an estimated savings per unit of approximately $315 per year. Smart meters will also be installed also. When combined with the provincial directive for mandatory time-of-use rates for customers, they can have a significant impact on customer behaviour. Household education will raise awareness of the consumer’s role in conservation, including the responsibility to contribute to GHG reduction. By providing information to tenants on the environmental impact of individual consumer activity, it is expected that this initiative will lower consumer demand for electricity.
