Description
The City of Delta will prepare a Community Energy and Emissions Plan (CEEP), with the goal of reducing the community’s contribution and vulnerability to climate change. The plan will include a vision, goals and targets for reducing energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the short, medium and long term.
The planning team will analyze Delta’s current energy and emissions profile, using the 2007 provincial Community Energy and Emissions Inventory and additional data collected by the city. The team will map and analyze local energy sources and infrastructure. A review of “business as usual” trends in energy use and greenhouse gas emissions will look at the existing residential, agricultural, industrial, commercial and institutional base. With this information, the city will create sector-specific indicators for energy use and GHG emissions.
The planning team will map current and future energy demand and identify opportunities to reduce energy use and GHG emissions in existing and new growth. The CEEP will identify renewable energy strategies, land use strategies and opportunities for district energy systems and local electricity generation. Specific strategies will be identified to reduce energy use in buildings, increase transportation sustainability, and increase participation in energy efficiency programs across all sectors. The CEEP will include a detailed implementation plan with a focus on key action items.
Stakeholders and the general public will be consulted through a number of community engagement mechanisms, including three or more workshops and the Mayor’s Task Force on Energy and Emissions, a city website dedicated to climate change issues.
