Description
The grant-funded employee will implement initiatives that increase the municipality’s capacity to adapt to climate change. The first phase of work will be to develop a Climate Change Adaptation plan. These plans identify climate change impacts, risks, and related adaptive strategies or actions related to the region, the community, a neighbourhood or a group of assets. The second phase of work will be to implement operational and institutional changes within the municipality that will help ensure long-term climate adaptation after the grant period. The final phase of work will involve preparatory work leading to the implementation of climate adaptations initiatives and the grant-funded staff person is requir¬¬ed to move activities from the planning stage to the implementation stage over the course of the grant period. Over the course of the two years, the Recipient will: • Create an advisory steering committee of the municipality, businesses and research institutes within the community.• Assess climate change impacts to the Town of Churchill and surrounding area - both to assets and natural resources.• Assess areas of vulnerability of municipal and community infrastructure to climate change impacts.• Risk assessment - look at both the likelihood, and the scale of damage which is possible.• Stakeholder Consultations to look at the above areas.• Create a Climate Change Adaptation plan which includeso Response plans to climatic eventso Adapting Municipal assetso Incorporation of climate vulnerability risk assessment into planningo Possibility of green infrastructure in building resiliencyo Creating partnerships and information flows with outside "owners" of vulnerable assets• Begin to look at policy which affects plans - provincial and municipal - and start to adjust policy and by-laws to reflect risks and adaptation eg building standards.• Begin implementation of Climate Adaption Plan.
