Description
The District of Lake Country, located on the northern outskirts of Kelowna BC, will build an 800 kW micro-hydro generation project within the existing waterworks. The capital works will consist of a small powerhouse, a turbine, a generator, control and protection equipment, a transformer and a three-phase 25 kV line to interconnect to BC Hydro. The output will be sold under long-term contract to BC Hydro. The project will supply 2,500 MWh of renewable energy per year. This is enough to supply roughly 250 homes each year for the life of the project (at least 35 years). The current source of energy for the District of Lake Country is the BC Hydro grid. In recovering energy that would otherwise be wasted by a pressure reducing system in the form of heat, noise and erosion, the plant will eliminate 43,750 tonnes of CO2 over the life of the project. NOx and SOx will also be avoided.
