Description

The City of Moncton developed an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan through public consultations, study and assessment. The goal was to identify an overarching vision and action plan that incorporated environmental, social and economic goals at the municipal corporate operations level and at the community level. Goals and targets were set for energy, water, wastewater, transportation, brownfields, ecological infrastructure, heritage management and land-use planning. The framework included implementation and monitoring plans and tools that could be replicated by other municipalities. In order to develop short-, medium- and long-term sustainability targets, the city set baseline data for corporate greenhouse gas emissions, average per capita water and energy consumption and waste generation, and asked the public to help prioritize goals and targets. The city also reviewed its land-use activities, policies and restrictions, and created an inventory of brownfield properties. Once implemented, the plan required all city departments to report on allocated tasks and follow-up activities. The city worked with local universities and subject matter experts to ensure that information on climate change, and the most up-to-date and innovative approaches, were used.
