Description
Although a number of databases and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) have emerged in the last several years, no single database or program is currently available to public transport authorities that combines or links various databases, especially for medium sized communities. In this study, the Société de transport de Sherbrooke (STS) will develop SAGE Transport, a central database that interfaces with existing municipal databases, institutional databases (Statistics Canada, provincial/federal transport departments, weather databases, etc) and some commercial databases related to ITS. STS will test tools, such as a Global Positing System (GPS), in real case scenarios to identify best routes and improved scheduling to improve ridership. Improved amenities such as bus shelters, communications message boards (maps, schedules and routes) and highly visible bus stop signs will be tested also at select locations. Rider feedback will be sought in relation to all tests. The potential benefit to the environment is the reduction in greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions resulting from increased ridership. The tools developed and the information they can provide will be useful to many other medium-sized municipalities across Canada.
