Description

The Brownfield Redevelopment Community Improvement Plan for the City of Welland will provide a comprehensive systems-based framework for the planning and implementation of environmental remediation, rehabilitation and economic revitalization of the City’s numerous brownfield sites (some 100+ acres) along the Welland Canal and throughout the City. Because Welland obtains its drinking water exclusively from the Canal, redevelopment of the sites along it is of particular importance for the health of workers and residents. The CIP will be based upon the Region of Niagara’s recently adopted Smart Growth Programs, known as Smarter Niagara, and will include a broad community consultation and stakeholder interview process. By incorporating sustainability principles into innovative planning and financial incentive strategies to promote brownfield redevelopment, it can become a model for other municipalities.
