Description
The District of Ucluelet (with a population of 1,717), located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, is carrying out a climate action plan in order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in their community. The District of Ucluelet joined FCM’s Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program in 2018 and the plan will use the PCP methodology to achieve both corporate and community milestones 1-3, which will enable the District to achieve milestone 5 by the year 2020. The plan will establish an updated baseline for Ucluelet’s GHG emissions inventory, reconfirm emissions reduction targets, and outline actions to reduce GHG emissions for municipal operations and the community in all areas of activity, including energy use, transportation planning, land use, waste and water management. The Plan sets a path to achieve the GHG reduction goals already committed to within the Ucluelet Official Community Plan; 33% by 2020 and 80% by 2050.Stakeholder engagement will be an important part of the planning process. To engage stakeholders, an advisory committee will be established that will consist of staff, not-for-profit organizations, and the business community. The District will also utilize an Official Community Plan update process to consult with the community on the climate action program. The district will carry out a Sustainability Speaker Engagement Series, which will highlight emission reduction opportunities for residents such as home energy efficiency, vehicle electrification, waste reduction and renewable energy. These sessions will not only provide valuable information to the community, but will also be a chance for the community to provide feedback and contribute the Community Energy and Emissions Plan.
