Description
The Municipality of Lambton Shores will revitalize the existing Bosanquet Community Centre in Thedford as the Legacy Recreation Centre (LRC), adding key resources — community centre, kitchen, library, and daycare centre — to the existing arena. The LRC, which was identified in the 2006 Lambton Shores Strategic Plan, will meet the LEED Silver standard and the site design and construction practices will minimize impacts on the local environment. The current building is the municipality’s largest user of energy and water. Reaching LEED Silver certification is expected to achieve a 46% energy cost savings relative to the Model National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings, producing annual operational savings of approximately $20,000 and a substantial carbon offset. Key design features include high-efficiency upgrades for the ice rink; heat reclamation; low-flow plumbing; high-efficiency HVAC and lighting controls; EnergyStar-rated commercial kitchen equipment; and solar electric panels. An extensive verification program will make it easier to monitor and further improve energy performance after the revitalization is complete. The community is excited about the project, having had their say at numerous public input sessions and joined in a fundraising campaign to help pay for it. Barrier-free access to all areas and a location close to low-income housing will reinforce community inclusiveness. The LRC will also act as a primary location for public meetings and a designated evacuation centre in emergencies. To assist other municipalities considering similar projects, Lambton Shores will provide a case study on its website. In the LRC itself, interactive displays and informational handouts on its “green” features will be available for staff and visitors, and staff will always be willing to take groups on a tour.
