Description
The Régie d’assainissement des eaux Richelieu/Saint-Laurent (RAERSL) will study various wind-powered aeration technologies for wastewater treatment to reduce energy consumption and costs and to provide optimal, ecological wastewater aeration. The RAERSL is a paramunicipal body that handles wastewater treatment for Sorel-Tracy, Saint-Joseph de Sorel and Sainte-Anne de Sorel. The current method of treating wastewater from these municipalities is through aerated ponds using electrically powered blowers and static aerators that consume large amounts of energy. This study will evaluate current oxygen transfer rates in the ponds and the oxygen requirements for maximizing aerobic digestion. It will also assess two main options in wind-source technology: individual windmill aerators to transfer oxygen directly to wastewater, and wind turbines to produce energy for the existing blowers. Using wind-powered aerators or turbines will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs. The savings from this cost reduction will be invested in renewable energy projects for other municipal operations.
