Description

The City of Lachute will retrofit the former Lachute United Church; converting it into a green, energy-efficient library with the capacity to serve the city’s 15,681 residents. Insulation, energy-efficient lighting and the use of geothermal energy will reduce energy consumption by 75%, compared with a reference building. Greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 104 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year. Rainwater harvesting, revegetation of the grounds and roof, and a more efficient plumbing system will also reduce water consumption. During the retrofit process, the city will use sustainability best practices such as recovering materials from demolition waste and using local, certified or recycled materials. When the design is completed, stakeholders will develop a measurement and verification protocol. Transforming the church into a library will revitalize the downtown area; preserve the integrity of urban green spaces and the church’s heritage aspect; and mitigate the building’s environmental impact.
