Description
The City of Ottawa will expand its Centrepointe Theatre facility with a two-story addition constructed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver performance standards for new buildings. The addition will incorporate design features and mechanical and HVAC systems that will reduce energy and water use, improve indoor air quality, and minimize the building’s environmental impact.
The facility is expected to be 41.2 per cent more energy efficient than the MNECB reference building. It will also reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 959 tonnes and cut potable water use by over 30 per cent. Approximately 75 per cent of construction waste and 60 per cent of solid waste produced during operation will be diverted from landfills. As one of a growing number of green buildings in a high density development node, the Centrepointe Theatre will promote transit use, walking, cycling, and carpooling.
The project reflects strategic and sustainability directions specified in the city’s 2020 Environmental Strategy, its Industrial, Commercial & Institutional Waste 3R Strategy, and its long-term Choosing Our Future planning project. In addition to helping minimize the city’s environmental impacts, the development is expected to have an impact on the city’s quality of life, economic prosperity and cultural vitality.
The Centrepointe addition will have the capacity to stage 144 shows and accommodate 22,000 audience members annually. It will employ approximately 140 workers during the construction phase. Once complete, the theatre will provide new employment and volunteer opportunities for local performers, producers and directors, and support the development of businesses that serve the theatre and its audiences.
