Description

The City of Mississauga will develop an environmental master plan to incorporate a culture of environmental sustainability into the City’s decisions, practices, policies, operations, administration, strategic investment and future growth. The city will integrate the environmental plan into its strategic plan. The strategic plan was approved in April 2009 and will function as the sustainability plan for the corporation and community. It builds upon past environmental initiatives already established that address issues like undeveloped brownfield lands, energy needs, the transportation and waste sectors and reductions in water use and the local action plan for climate change.
Before drafting the plan, the project team will update the city’s inventory of community environmental organizations. The team will also put together an inventory of all existing and planned city environmental initiatives, programs, operations and activities such as the completed Partners for Climate Protection Local Action Plan. The first draft of the environmental master plan will be based on the visioning and public engagement conducted for the city’s strategic plan in 2009. Once the first draft is prepared, the city will gather feedback through consultation with residents, businesses, agencies and community groups. Consultations will take place through workshops, open houses and the Internet.
The plan will feature short, medium and long-term goals complete with targets and indicators to monitor progress. The intent is to establish an annual monitoring system to ensure that the city is progressing with the actions. The final report will include standards and best practices, as well as a life-cycle assessment process to help the city make strategic decisions.
