Description

Brandon is the second largest city in Manitoba with a population of ~52,000 and has received several environmental accolades including developing a brownfield strategy, completed all five milestones in the Partners for Climate Protection Program, curbside organics collection program, and a residential rain garden program to name a few.
The City is scheduled to have a new climate action plan be completed in early may of 2023. This plan will outline actions for both the corporation and the community to implement to set the pace to achieving net zero by 2050.
The City of Brandon is seeking funding to implement the “City of Brandon Fossil Fuel Reduction Fleet Study” to identify opportunities for its fleet. These opportunities are to include:
•    Purchasing properly sized municipal vehicles for various uses (fleet optimization)
•    Zero emission vehicle and alternative fuel fleet conversion (light, heavy, other)
•    Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fleet operations by 20%
The City’s current fleet size is ~300 pieces of equipment.
•    Heavy duty: 123
•    Light duty: 121
•    Other (composter, fork lifts etc.:) 56
The City of Brandon Fossil Fuel Reduction Fleet Study will set the city up for success in multiple ways by identifying the amount of emissions reduced, contribute to better air quality resulting in a heathier community, improved fleet planning for the corporation through a climate lens, save on fuel and maintenance costs which benefits the corporation and the tax payers of Brandon. This project is important because it is one area that the City has not focused on in past years and will show the community it is leading by example to mitigate climate change. This may inspire others to take environmental action.
