Description
The City of Yellowknife in partnership with Northlands Condo Corporation will conduct a feasibility study to evaluate options for upgrading the condos’ sewer and water mains to ensure they meet city standards. The underground water and sewer systems of the affordable downtown neighbourhood have reached the end of their useful life and are posing environmental and health concerns. Sewer pipes are degrading and collapsing, resulting in backups in residences, gravel and soil accumulation in sewers, and significant water loss. Treating, heating and distributing lost water accounts for as much as 10 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions each year. As part of the feasibility study, the city will focus on reducing consumption through water conservation education and replacement of less-efficient household fixtures. By finding and carrying out solutions to these concerns, the city expects to reduce water consumption by 180 litres per capita per day and GHG emissions by about 20 tonnes annually.
