Description
The grant-funded employee will implement initiatives that increase the municipality’s capacity to adapt to climate change. The first phase of work will be to develop a climate risk response plan for the municipality. These plans identify climate change impacts, risks, and related adaptive strategies or actions related to the region, the community, a neighbourhood or a group of assets. Once the climate adaption plan is developed, the second phase of work will be to implement operational and institutional changes within the municipality that will help ensure long-term climate adaptation after the grant period. The final phase of work will involve preparatory work leading to the implementation of climate adaptation initiatives and the grant-funded staff person is requir¬¬ed to move activities from the planning stage to the implementation stage over the course of the grant period. In Year 1, the Recipient plans to:- Develop a climate adaptation policy- Develop an implementation plan for existing Climate Action Plan- Develop a performance measure to track the progress and outcomes of climate adaptation initiatives- Report to Council regarding status of Climate Action and Implementation Plan- Set up a climate adaptation team and steering committee- Engage with senior leadership on adaptation plan and policy- Work with climate steering committee to clearly identify responsibilities for staff in key departments to implement the Climate Action Plan- Identify stakeholders within the community and develop a communications plan including community consultation and newsletters to the public- Collaborate with the Agricultural Services Board to identify crops suitable for the future of climate in the region- Develop an education and training program for local farmers on existing crop management and techniquesIn Year 2, the Recipient intends to: - Report to Council regarding status of Climate Action plan and implementation- Coordinate and participate in the climate adaptation team and steering committee- Engage with senior leadership regarding climate adaptation plan and policy- Work with climate steering committee to clearly identify responsibilities for staff in key departments to implement the Climate Action Plan- Hold community consultation to inform public on climate change impacts and opportunities and potential adaptation initiatives- Develop a water conservation policy to provide incentives for water conservation- Develop a wetland policy- Collaborate with FireSmart for community events- Prepare newsletter submission regarding climate change adaptation initiatives and progress on Action Plan implementation- Develop policy for installation of bioswales and green infrastructure to manage rainwater in new developments
