Description

The City of Red Deer is investigating geothermal energy as a renewable energy source for a group of new municipal buildings and facilities at its relocated Civic Yards site. A preliminary study revealed that a geothermal exchange heat pump could displace a significant percentage of the heating and cooling energy needed for the buildings. The hydrogeological study will determine parameters, such as, groundwater flow rate, longevity of groundwater flow, and interaction of the below-grade water table, to confirm the feasibility of an open-loop geothermal exchange system. Methodology will include a literature review, borehole drilling and testing, and geo-exchange modeling. The final report will recommend an optimal location and the number of extraction and injection wells required. It will also identify potential guidelines, approvals or standards required to implement the renewable energy system that is expected to provide 60 percent of the heating and 100 percent of the cooling for the buildings. Electricity required for the geo-exchange system will be generated from wind power; therefore, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will be zero. The reduction in natural gas consumption will result in an expected GHG reduction of 1,992 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.
