Description

The City of Iqaluit will build a 13,000 square meter, multi-use Aquatic Center aiming to achieve LEED silver certification in the downtown core, which will provide much needed recreation and meeting space for the community. The facility will be fueled primarily by a district energy system that captures waste heat from the diesel-run generators that provide electricity for the city. The building will incorporate a number of energy efficiency measures, a solar wall to pre-heat air for the HVAC system, and a measurement verification system of the building's energy consumption over time.

The facility will be built in a pedestrian-friendly location on a vacant brownfield site, which will be remediated in-situ during the building construction. The centre will target a 35% reduction in water use, a 50% diversion rate for construction waste, and will incorporate pieces of equipment salvaged from a closed local pool. The building design also includes a corrosion-resistant foundation and aboveground supports to minimize impacts to permafrost on the site and provide a stable foundation. The design process involved extensive community consultation to ensure the space and services meet residents’ needs. This Aquatic Centre will be the first LEED building in Nunavut.
