Description

This study will assess the feasibility of installing a co–generation facility at the city's wastewater treatment plant. Theproposed facility would be fuelled by biogas (gases formed by biological means) produced in sealed, airtight tanks thatallow bacteria to thrive and assist in decomposition. These tanks, known as digesters, produce gas that can be burnedto generate electricity and heat for use within the plant. The co–generation project would improve air quality by reducingthe need for electrical energy generated by fossil–fuelled power plants and by eliminating the need to flare excessdigester gas at the plant. Digester gas (a renewable resource) would replace natural gas (a non–renewable resource)as the fuel used to meet process and space–heating requirements at the plant. These benefits will be quantified bycomparing the plant's consumption of natural gas and electrical power before and after the implementation ofco–generation.
