Description

To replace currently outdated and undersized premises, the Saint John Transit Commission will build a new operations centre to meet LEED Silver guidelines. The goal of this development is to support an increase in transit ridership to 4 million from 2.6 million, and save 158,000 km annually in running costs by moving the premises to an underdeveloped near-central location. The new building is designed to be 43.6 per cent more energy efficient than a similar building reference under the Model National Energy Code for Buildings. Two major contributors to those savings are the 200-square-metre solar south wall, the first in Atlantic Canada, which will provide 8 per cent of the building’s energy; and a 100,000-litre underground water storage system that will hold rainwater channelled from the building’s roof for use in washing buses. Other contributors include increased building envelope insulation and energy-efficient windows; efficient lighting, with occupancy and light sensors and a 75 per cent daylight requirement in regularly occupied spaces; heat-recovery ventilation; and efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The project will contribute substantially to the city’s Municipal Energy Efficiency Program, which aims to reduce operational energy consumption by 25 per cent by 2011.
