Description

The town is planning to construct nutrient–removal facilities as part of an upgrade to its wastewater treatment plant. Theupgrade would enable the plant to remove phosphorus and ammonia as nitrogen, drastically reducing the amount ofthose chemicals left in treated wastewater that is discharged into the Bow River. Parks Canada has asked the town todemonstrate environmental leadership by setting tougher standards for nutrient removal than the ones the AlbertaEnvironment Ministry currently requires. The town has already committed to meeting applicable provincial and federalstandards. This study will explore technical options to achieve much higher standards to protect the environment in aNational Park setting. The project will provide an excellent example for other communities, especially those in a sensitiveenvironment.
