Description

The Regional District's Air Quality Department, in partnership with member municipalities, will study the cost and energysavings and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions that would result from installing solar-thermal heating systems at19 municipal swimming pools. The pools currently use natural gas boilers to heat water for the pools. Solar heatingtechnology will improve air quality and reduce the municipalities' use of natural gas, cutting emissions of carbon dioxide(a major greenhouse gas) and nitrogen oxides, a component of smog. It is estimated the retrofits will reduce annualenergy requirements by 25 to 50 per cent and that the savings on energy costs will pay for the retrofits within 10 years orless.
