Description

In compliance with its Waste Management Plan and at the request of its citizens, the Regional County Municipality (RCM) of La Haute Yamaska will create two eco-centres in the region. Slated to open in the winter of 2011, they will divert 50 per cent of the municipality’s waste, approximately 20 per cent more than the current two-stream domestic waste collection system, which is complemented by special irregular collections. This costly project (the total is estimated at $3.5 million and the annual treatment costs at $1 million) is an essential step for ensuring the quality of input at the future organic waste treatment centre. In addition to the long-term economic benefits, the eco-centres will offer the opportunity to create a social-economic initiative, such as a training centre in enterprise and recycling on the site. It will also contribute to the protection and improvement of the health of the citizens in the region’s communities due, in part, to better management of hazardous domestic waste and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions produced by landfill sites.
