Description

The City of Westmount, in partnership with the Société de Transport de Montréal (STM), will undertake an on-site soil treatability study and a pilot project on the former site of the STM garages. The site is contaminated with hydrocarbons and straddles the city limits of Westmount and the South-West Borough of the City of Montreal. A Phase I environmental site assessment and Phase II comprehensive characterization studies have already been carried out. The project will follow these steps: a supplementary environmental characterization; a test to treat soil on-site by biodegradation in a laboratory; a pilot project to treat soil on-site over five per cent of the site area; and a follow-up environmental characterization of the treated area. If field tests are conclusive, the entire site will be remediated in this manner. A successful remediation of the site will help to achieve the City of Montreal’s objectives for redeveloping this sector located in a densely populated area, ensuring the quality of effluent discharged in the waterways, and protecting the biodiversity in an urban environment. The on-site decontamination will also have a lighter environmental impact than a conventional remediation procedure as it will generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
