Description

As part of its activities to implement the Metropolitan Waste Management Plan (MRMMP) for the North Suburban Ring of the Montreal Metropolitan Community, the MRC of l’Assomption will look into the feasibility of creating new waste treatment infrastructures on behalf of the Table of Prefects and Elected Officials of the North Suburban Ring in the hope of achieving and exceeding the MRMMP targets concerning recovery and reclamation of 60% of waste. A technical committee will be created to monitor compliance with objectives and deadlines set for this study.
The study will allow officials to refine results of a comparative study undertaken in 2008 that looked into 17 possible collection and treatment scenarios for waste. The methodology used for analyzing the scenarios is based on an integrated approach that will take into account the impacts of collection, transportation, treatment and the ultimate elimination of waste. The criteria for selecting the best option will include environmental, social, technical and economic aspects that will have been approved by representatives of the 17 decision-making centres within the North Suburban Ring. The environmental impacts generated by the different scenarios will be examined based on several criteria including solid and liquid discharge, energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions.
Selected scenarios will be part of the Regional Master Plan (RMP) that, once implemented, will allow the Ring to reduce the amount of waste currently being eliminated by 201,000 tonnes per year, thus generating savings for residents, creating 5,200 jobs and reducing the harmful impacts of landfilling on the quality of life, public health and property values near the landfill sites.
