Description
In anticipation of a call for bids for the purchase of renewable energy by Hydro-Québec in the summer of 2006, the Petit-Saguenay Economic Development Corporation and its municipal partners will undertake a comprehensive wind feasibility study of the cost-effectiveness of a 50-MW project involving development costs in the range of $80 to $90 million dollars. Plans are for 25 wind generators rated at 2 MW apiece. The two sites identified are in an isolated mountainous region far from population centres and away from scenic or tourist sites, but less than 25 km from the transmission lines. It is estimated that the wind farm would displace 61,167 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide equivalent (CO2e) a year, 277,320 kilograms of Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) a year and 103,478 kilograms of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) a year. An additional environmental benefit would be reduction of the need to undertake development of major hydroelectric or fossil fuel power plants.
