Description

Redevelopment of brownfield areas is a key step in “Smart Growth” planning. Currently the City of Niagara Falls has anestimated 200+ acres of land that is contaminated. The objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive CommunityImprovement Plan (CIP) that will serve as a redevelopment stimulus for former underutilized industrial and commercialproperties, while in the process decontaminating some of the community’s worst brownfield sites. The CIP will beincluded in the City’s Official Plan, meaning that brownfields will be given a priority for redevelopment. In addition, afinancial incentive framework will be developed to attract the private sector, and the pilot area will involve the creation ofa land use plan for a brownfields showcase site.
