Description
The District of Lake Country will investigate the possibility of generating hydroelectricity and building a micro-hydro generation system entirely within the existing waterworks, without damaging the water system or disrupting the current operations. It is likely that the system will consist of a small powerhouse, a series of turbines, a generator, control and protection equipment, a transformer and several metres of three-phase 25 kilovolts line tointerconnect to the existing grid. It is estimated also that approximately four million kilowatt-hours per year of emission free and impact free energy could be produced using the flow in the existing waterworks system. This would be enough electricity to service roughly 400 homes per year for the anticipated 35-year life of the project. Should this study prove project feasibility, the District anticipates an emissions reduction of 2,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. In addition, the District estimates that for every Gigawatt hour of hydroelectric energy generated, 500 tonnes of CO2 would be avoided. Nitrogen oxide and ssulphur oxide would be avoided also, but the primary benefit would be in CO2 reduction.
