Description

The King’s Daughters and Sons Apartments Incorporated (KDS) is an Ottawa-based not-for-profit housing provider that currently operates 128 units of affordable housing for seniors. In 2019, KDS added 58 units to its original 70-unit seniors residence built in 1964. This application will explore the retrofitting of the original post-war building to investigate the feasibility of NZER and/or Passive House standards. The plan will include several energy efficiency elements, such as: · An envelope upgrade on the exterior building with air barrier, insulation and new cladding; · New high-performance windows; · Replacement of existing electric baseboard heating system with a heat pump system and ventilation with heat recovery and seasonal cooling; · Upgrade or replacement of the existing electric hot water heaters; · A roof-mounted photo-voltaic system. The planning grant will help KDS define the scope of the work required to retrofit the building by gathering baseline information and energy modelling. Resulting information regarding existing conditions, opportunities and limitations will allow KDS to determine a clear path forward to move through the study and capital project stages.
