Description

Markham District Energy Inc. (MDE), owned by the Town of Markham, is developing a ‘best-in-class’ district energy system (DES) to serve Markham Centre - the Town’s developing mixed-use downtown area that will be home to as many as 25,000 residents and 17,000 employees. It will encompass approximately 15 million square feet of mixed use buildings (residential, commercial and institutional). The long term goal is to connect 100 per cent of Markham Centre to the DES. MDE’s 2007 capital plan includes several important project elements including the construction of Birchmount Road South and Clegg Road DES infrastructure, the engineering and construction of the Birchmount Road Energy Centre, a number of new building connections, and the construction of a 5.0 MW Combined Heat & Power (CHP) plant to add to the existing 3.5 MW capacity currently installed at the Warden Energy Centre. A District Energy Solar Thermal Demonstration will be undertaken also. It will introduce solar thermal energy to a building’s secondary loop hot water return to reduce the thermal load on the district energy supply. The fully developed Markham Centre DES will include a fleet of CHP generators with a total rated capacity of 30MW, operating at 4,000 hours annually for a total electricity production of 12,000 MWh per year.
