Description

Motivated by new provincial regulations dealing with waste diversion, the Town of Port-Cartier will conduct a waste audit to assess the quantity and nature of the waste it currently sends to landfill. A two-month waste audit, during which the team will weigh disposal trucks and perform modelling on waste components, will help the town evaluate the need for a sorting centre, waste collection centre and composting centre. As well, following a review of geological conditions, the team will estimate the cost of constructing an engineered landfill to replace the existing sanitary landfill. The study will also include the establishment of a public education program and the distribution of a waste and recycling collection calendar. The three proposed diversion facilities would potentially reduce 8,400 tonnes of waste annually, helping the municipality reach a 60 per cent diversion target. Landfill gas recovery from the proposed engineered landfill has the potential to cut 48,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions over the next eight years. The town also hopes to provide up to 40 operating jobs for physically and mentally disabled individuals through a partnership with a local non-profit group.
