Description
The City of Guelph will remediate a City-owned vacant contaminated site – formerly a metal foundry and salvage yard – that covers 13 inner-city acres, located in a light industrial area with some residential properties close by. Previous environmental investigations confirmed that the soil and groundwater contains various contaminants. Remedial actions to date have included removal of above grade waste and 10,000 tonnes of contaminated soil. In this study, the City will complete Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), a preliminary Remedial Action Plan (RAP), a redevelopment plan, and a risk assessment. This will define the extent of contamination and remediation activities required prior to site redevelopment. Remediation alternatives will depend on the characteristics and extent of the contamination. Once the site has been remediated, it will provide opportunities for housing, commercial, parkland, and institutional development. The site redevelopment will likely incorporate sustainable features leading to reductions in water use, energy use, greenhouse emissions, and urban sprawl.
