Description

Bicycle Nova Scotia, in partnership with the Municipality of the District of Chester, the Town of Lunenburg and the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg will be carrying out a climate mitigation study to assess the financial, technical and social feasibility of constructing bikeway networks on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. The study will consider network development in the Village of Chester, Town of Mahone Bay and Town of Lunenburg as well as links to the Blue Route network, including the operational route along the Rum Runners Trail and long-term plans to complete 3000 km of connected and safe cycling infrastructure around the province of Nova Scotia. Bicycle Nova Scotia will work directly with community members and key stakeholders to evaluate potential bikeway network, facility design options, implementation opportunities and impacts. This study will play a key role in transitioning the South Shore towards being low carbon communities and decreasing reliance on single occupancy vehicles. These communities have already made active transportation a priority and this study is the next step towards implementing a complete and safe cycling network and connecting to the larger province wide Blue Route. This project aims to increase cycling mode share and reduce the number of trips taken by single occupancy vehicles. There are also significant social, health and economic benefits of investing in cycling infrastructure that will make the South Shore a stronger community and more attractive place to live and work.
