Description
In partnership with the Regional Municipality of Peel, the City of Brampton, the County Court Neighbourhood Association and the Ontario Climate Consortium, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) will develop a neighbourhood-based vulnerability assessment and climate adaptation strategy for the County Court neighbourhood in Brampton, Ontario. The project will draw from available municipal sector-based vulnerability mapping and information on potential risks, and refine it by drawing on community experience, local knowledge, and perceptions of risk. The strategy will contain mapping and identification of key climate impacts (e.g. heat waves, electrical outages, floods) on community services and assets, along with adaptive management opportunities. In addition, a monitoring framework will be developed with appropriate indicators and tracking methods for each of the plan’s recommendations. Community stakeholders and municipalities will come together through two workshops and a number of meetings, to contribute to identifying vulnerabilities and developing the adaptation strategy. Engagement of community leaders in this process will build community connections and capacity for local action.By working within a neighbourhood which has been the focus of a Sustainable Neighbourhood Retrofit Action Plan (SNAP), this project takes advantage of already established partnerships with municipalities and community leaders. Furthermore, adaptation recommendations can be integrated with the next phase of retrofit projects and programs as part of SNAP implementation, thus contributing multiple co-benefits (e.g. urban forest, green infrastructure, community connections, etc.).
