Description
This project seeks to encourage individuals to increase recovery of recyclable materials by associating their participationwith the incentive of points. It will locate, adapt or manufacture an effective optical scanner connected to waste collectiontrucks to capture a bar code affixed to the recovery container. Information on recovery will be transmitted electronically toa database and participating citizens will collect and accumulate “points” which may be exchanged at the OMNIBACprogram’s partners. The project objective of increasing the total materials recovered to 25 per cent of the waste streamrepresents a 67 per cent increase over the current diversion rate. Additional outcomes will be a better understanding ofrecycling participation rates, reasons for non-participation, and recommendations for increasing participation. Unique inCanada, the OMNIBAC program is an important demonstration that can be implemented in other Quebec and Canadiancities.
