Description
The Town of Minto developed an integrated strategic sustainable community plan to identify and prioritize sustainability measures in the community. The plan aimed to set high-level goals and objectives and identify concrete strategies, projects and actions. It was to be used by municipal staff and council, residents, business and industry. Working with an existing Community Vision Statement, the project team reviewed background documents on sustainability issues. Specific sustainability themes, issues and problems were identified during meetings with council and through key informant interviews. Public workshops identified priorities, which the project team then used to establish sustainable development objectives by setting targets for the short, medium and long terms. The team researched the targets, identified methods for achieving them and assessed their feasibility. The resulting recommendations were outlined in the draft sustainability plan, which was submitted to Minto’s council and the public for comment. After the review process, the plan was expected to be finalized and approved. The town planned to implement the plan by assigning tasks to specific individuals, departments, groups or agencies. The town’s Environmental and Energy Committee oversaw implementation, and reviewed and updated the plan twice a year.
