Description
The Town of Banff will redevelop and expand its recreation centre to meet the recreational and cultural needs of the growing Banff community. The new facility will be constructed to a LEED Silver standard and will include an upgrade of the existing arena structure. The project team will take apart the existing curling rink building and use salvaged material in the construction of a new four-sheet curling rink and curling lounge area. The town will also replace the existing arena slab and board system and construct a second NHL-sized ice arena.
Sustainable features will include on-site stormwater management, energy-efficient lighting, heat recovery for hot water heating, low-flow plumbing fixtures, re-use of rain and ice melt to flush toilets, and re-use of materials from older town structures. The town will also remove and properly dispose of asbestos used in the insulation of the old facility. Parking space will be minimized and relocated away from surrounding watercourses. To rehabilitate the creekside habitat, the town will replant native species.
The LEED Silver building standard will mean greater energy and water efficiency. The estimated energy savings resulting from the proposed measures are designed to be 42.5% better than the Model National Energy Code for Buildings. This will result in an estimated energy reduction of 6,328 Gigajoules per year. Building the facility to this standard will save at least 37.3 per cent (or $100,000) per year on operating costs. The new facility is expected to attract more events and visitors to Banff. It will provide enhanced opportunities for active living and an upgraded gathering space for local community members and visitors.
