Description

The City of Burnaby believes that parking requirements could be reduced by 50 to 75 per cent for residential and officedevelopments in areas serviced by the SkyTrain, yielding numerous social and environmental benefits, such as,improved air quality and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, reduction of urban sprawl and increased attractiveness oftown centres. This study will examine parking supply and demand issues and opportunities for commuters, visitors andresidents in and around transit-friendly development located in the City’s regional town centre and its two SkyTrainstations. The parking demand, needs and standards in the Metrotown district will be compared against other centresserved by SkyTrain within the City, in particular, areas now served by the newest extension of the SkyTrain, as well as,against neighbourhoods serviced by SkyTrain in other parts of GVRD. Selected districts in other cities, such as Calgary(AB) and Portland (OR), will be included in the study. The completed study will provide an empirical basis for thedevelopment of a new parking strategy for Metrotown and support the development of new parking strategies in otherarea served by SkyTrain in Burnaby.
