Description

This feasibility study will assess the technical aspects of using local geological formations and aquifers forheat–pump–driven recovery of underground heat. The energy and financial gains associated with this low–enthalpygeothermal power make it a potentially viable source of power: energy is gained because underground heat is arenewable energy source, and savings are possible because the energy–recovery processes are low–cost. Currently, theheating and cooling needs for the buildings and facilities administered by the Îles–de–la–Madeleine municipalities aremet by electricity generated at a local thermal power plant using fuel oils. These fuel oils generate atmosphericemissions, as well as leaks, which have been detected in some oil tanks. This envisioned technology has rarely beenused at the municipal level to generate power throughout a Regional County Municipality. At the same time, it protectsresources while providing a more economic source of heat and cooling. The study will require the development andapplication of a specifically tailored decision–making tool that could be applied in other situations.
